Spotlight on Cove Resident
April 6th, 2008
Sipping iced tea on a beautiful April afternoon in a peaceful garden of a La Quinta Cove casita built in 1937, my thoughts wandered. Daily life in the Cove during that time was very different from today, but the beautiful views have remained the same. I was experiencing a wonderful opportunity to visit this historical home at the invitation of Maggie Gordon, author of “Historical Casitas of La Quinta Cove”. I was thrilled to have the experience! In my 15 years in the Cove, I have viewed these “little houses” only from the street and have had a curiosity for their origins and the history of our eclectic Cove neighborhood.
Maggie and her husband, Bill purchased this casita in 2003. I asked Maggie what prompted her interest in the casitas of the Cove; she said “the Spanish Colonial architecture warms my heart”. They began a mission to renovate this neglected property that took approximately 1 year to complete. During that time, Maggie embarked on a project to find answers as to the real story behind the casitas. This project resulted in her fascinating and informative book “Historical Casitas of La Quinta Cove”. She researched city and county records, spoke to members of the La Quinta Historical Society and sent out questionnaires to the approximately 63 casita owners to compile information and to try to sort the facts from the fables. As a Cove lover and resident, I was very happy to read this history and learn from Maggie’s hard work. The Gordon’s casita is a charming home and full of history. Quoting from Maggie’s book…..”if only the casita walls could talk, there would be many more stories”.

I truly recommend this book to all who live in this community filled with history and charm. Maggie is a true Cove neighbor who cares deeply for our neighborhood and its history.

TALK BACK: Resident weighs in on dark sky debate: Let’s debate!
April 3rd, 2008
| DARK SKY vs. STREET LIGHTS! I know…I know…this is a sizzling hot topic right now, but let’s try to figure out a way to compromise. We all know the night sky is really pretty, however, when taking a walk down a dark street, you don’t really think about looking at the sky…you tend to concentrate on what’s around the corner. The International Dark Sky Association (IDA) has a web site – www.darksky.org – that has a link to IDA approved fixtures. This is where the compromise will come in. The link has good ideas for street lights! I encourage both sides to visit the site. Let’s try to have a healthy debate about this. No name calling please. Neither side is “stupid” nor “ignorant” we all just have our opinions in which we would like to express. Keep an open mind. READY, SET, DEBATE! Thank you! Leslie C |
