National Night Out

July 30th, 2008

The City of La Quinta would like to inform everyone of National Night Out. It is an event to help promote drug awareness and crime prevention for the youth. The City of La Quinta is partnering with Target and the Boys and Girls Club on Tuesday, August 5 at the Boys and Girls Club gymnasium from 5pm to 8pm. There will be several free games and goodies for the entire family. Senator Battin’s office will be there doing finger printing for the children and stores like Best Buy, Trader Joes, and more.

ATTENTION WOMEN OF THE COVE

July 30th, 2008

“Over 60% of women believe their biggest health threat is breast cancer, but heart disease kills six times as many women as breast cancer.”

“Some risk factors are different for women than for men.”

“Heart attacks often strike without warning. If a woman does not realize heart disease is a health threat, she will not make heart-healthy changes or respond to symptoms once they occur.”

This information can be found at www.womensheart.org .  There is a Heart Disease Risk Quiz that is a helpful tool for women.

TALK BACK ON STREET SIGNS

July 29th, 2008

From:  AW

I prefer the street sign pole location show at Rubio and Nogales and that the street signs have their own poles and not be placed on top of stop signs.  I vote for getting rid of the oblisks as they become damaged. They are not functional and I do not see the historical significance (perhaps the ones on Eisenhower could stay, they are at least a little nicer looking).  We could use the money saved each year from ongoing maintenance costs of oblisks to purchase some really nice, classy street signs for the cove.

I am hoping that we will upgrade the street signs to something other than the demo signs that are out there.  There are lots of street sign designs to chose from, this should be the next step in the process.

Volunteers for Heroes…..a project of the East Coachella Valley Peace Vigil

Everyone has been extraordinarily generous in contributing items and (cash for postage) to send donations to our soldiers in Iraq – so that they know their efforts and courage are not forgotten.

Today – July 21 – the last of the donated items was shipped to the Army officer in Iraq who will be distributing the donations to the men and women under his command in various outlying locations throughout Iraq.

Attached are photos of the soldiers opening the first batch of CARE packages.

208 lbs. of items in total have been mailed, including:
                    40 packages of beef jerky
47 bottles of Tapatio hot sauce
                  132 Top Ramen/ Instant Lunch
124 packets of chips, nuts and seeds
                    68 chapsticks
                    89 packages of candies
55 greeting cards for soldiers to send
                    38 pairs of socks/33 boxer briefs/6 T-shirts
                        menudo, coffee, microwave popcorn, cookies,
Cracker Jacks, cigarette lighters, pocket calculators, flashlight,
dice, bubble bath, body lotion, emery boards and Elle magazine

The project will be ongoing.  Donations will be accepted at the monthly La Quinta Peace Vigils (August 6) and at the donation box at Old Town Coffee Company in Old Town La Quinta.

Thank you again very much for your generous support.
I was disappointed to find out the Gym at the YMCA closes at around 5pm. Since that is what time I get off work, It would be great to have a community gym, that LQ residents could use for a small fee. Like the country clubs have. I know there is the outdoor equipment at the park, but in the heat of summer it’s not very fun, plus the machines offer little resistance. Just wanted to see what people think of it.

City’s website has some great photos of the demonstration signs along Nogales (Obregon and west three blocks). Take a look. And while you’re at it, contact them to let THEM know what you think. I’m sure they are keeping a log of responses, so be SURE to “speak up”.
