TALK BACK FROM COVE RESIDENT

August 31st, 2008

FROM BATAVIA:

CHP and Sheriffs helicopters regularly fly around the cove….apparently not in “chase” mode. Does anyone know if they use our normally quiet and peaceful cove as a training flight area? If so, I’d like to take a NIMBY stance, since the Cove is a natural sound bowl.

TALK BACK – DOGS

August 31st, 2008

FROM LARRY & SHARON

We live at the top of the cove and walk on the paseo next to the wash. In the past few months, dog waste has become quite a nuisance. We were walking our granddaughter with her little bike and she could hardly ride a straight line for all the dog litter. Also many dog owners think that once they get on the path they can let their dogs off the leash and they are running all over the place. While we haven’t seen any dog fights or attacks, I am afraid that it will happen sooner or later. Can something be done about this. Maybe a spontaneous patrol of the code enforcement people. It happens mostley in the morning but there are several dog walkers in the early evening. Thanks for you help.

FROM THE MODERATOR:

To Larry and Sharon,

You must be a new subscriber to the website and we welcome you.  The inconsiderate dog owners who allow their dogs to run off the leash are a constant problem and it has been addressed with the City Animal Control folks.  They are doing intermittent patrols to cite the offenders.  There is a leash law in this state and the city tries to enfoce it.  However, they are not there all of the time so it is important to report violations via the City website or to call Code Enforcement/Animal Control.

The dog feces is a unbelievable problem in our beautiful and pristine area of the cove.  It is a violation of Municipal Codes and a slap in the face to reasonable people who cannot believe that people do not clean up after their dogs.  There is a twice a year cleanup of the area by volunteers and the main problem is dog feces.  Why do dog owners believe that cleaning up is someone else’s job and not for them to worry about?  Does anyone know why this problem exists?  Do the dog owners clean up after their dog in their own home? I wonder.

EDITORIAL

August 24th, 2008

Does misery love company?  Until the recent TALK BACK comment from a subscriber of the website regarding cars parking on the street, I thought I was the only one who agonized over this problem.  As I drive through the streets of the Cove, I see many, many cars parked in the street.  However, my personal anquish comes from my own street.  My street has relatively no cars parked on the street EXCEPT for the house across the street from me.  This house has a minimum of six cars (and assorted trucks) parked on the street in front of their house, their driveway and my street front.  There are 5 adults (driving age) living in the home.  No vehicle in this houshold is parked in the garage.  Why does this matter to me?  Any one of the six vehicles are usually parked in front of my mailbox.  The Post Office will not deliver my mail when this occurs.  I have asked nicely, left written requests in English and Spanish on the windshield but I never have complete compliance.  They say, “Oh sorry” or “It will never happen again” but it is a continuing problem.  I have contacted the Post Office to see if there is a remedy and have been told that it is not their problem.  The curb cannot be painted and the Post Office does not have to get out of the vehicle to deliver the mail.  The only real solution is for me to get a Post Office Box for the delivery of mail.  My mail delivery is one problem but the other is that when I have a dinner party or my gardener or pool cleaner tries to park to service my property, there is no available parking.

Now on to the whole problem as I see it.  As I drive around the Cove and see open garage doors–it is evident that many folks use their garage as a storage facility of junk and useless possessions.  The total worth of items in their garage probably totals $300.00,  but they leave their 2nd most valuable asset (the vehicles)  anywhere from $25,000 to $35,000 in the driveway or on the street.  Does this make any sense?  They are the same people who complain about vandelism to their vehicles and stolen items from them.  They believe that street lights are the problem.  If they would park their vehicles with their personal property inside in the garage, that problem would go away.

I usually don’t complain about items that I have no solution or a way that this can be fixed, but it is a “no-brainer” to me and I can see no real way to fix this if people do not have the pride or motivation to make a difference in the community.  Clean out your garage and use it for the purpose intended.  PARKING YOUR VEHICLE.

Would there be a way to enforce NO PARKING on the streets up in the Cove? Durning evening hours our streets look like parking lots. Isn’t that what driveways are for? Moderater:  Any comments on this topic?

FROM THE MODERATOR:

The comment from madcy@msn.com about vegetable gardening in the Cove was very useful.  I would welcome a complete step by step article from this subscriber to help all of us to start our garden.  This subscriber obviously has a green thumb and their experience would be very helpful.  Let’s hear from you again.

Meanwhile, I have been doing a small search for hints and trying to narrow it down to our climate conditions in the Cove.  I found an article about WORMS in the Central California newspaper “The Fresno Bee”.  I know from personal experience that the summers are very hot in that area so maybe some of the tips in the article linked below will be helpful.  Let me know what you think.

Apologies from the Moderator:

I made a mistake on the contact email posted this AM about interest in Water Dancing.  The correct email for response is calcak@verizon.net .  Sorry for the confusion.
