The City recently painted the names of the cross streets on the Fred Wolff Bear Creek Trail to help us orient ourselves as we walk/ride/jog.  There’s a quarter mile between each intersection (in the Cove grid) so those markings are at least 1/4 mile, or maybe longer when the Trail winds around a bit.  It’s turned hot since these shots were taken, so here’s a cool sample of the new signage.

Energy tip

June 24th, 2009

Looking for ways to save energy?  There’s more to do than replacing light bulbs and turning off light switches.

For example:  Your computer, monitor, and printer/scanner, if left on, can consume a lot of electricity.  Turn them off when not in use and save yourself a “watt” of energy.

Your electric consumption this summer will go sky high.  Do you average your IID bill so that you pay the same amount each month?  It sure saves the sticker shock in the peak months.  Call IID and ask about it, if you haven’t already considered this great payment option.

This from Lauren:

I moved to the Cove from San Diego almost 2 years ago and I love it here. I have my studio in my home and so I can enjoy the beauty all day long. I walk the path almost every day and enjoy all the sights and sounds of nature at it’s best. I am an animal lover and wonder why so many people leave their cats out at night knowing they may lose them to a coyote. I have seen several and they sure look healthy. I have rescued 3 cats and love them dearly and would not even risk letting them out.

The first “Yappy Hour” will be held on Tuesday evening (23rd) on the lawn in Old Town from 6-8 p.m.  This is a benefit event for Guide Dogs of the Desert.  Drinks, goodies, PRIZES for every dog, raffle, etc. are in store, so come and join in the fun.  Bring your (well-behaved, leashed) dog and your checkbook and support this worthy agency  (website www.gddca.org).

The City Council will vote (July 7) on a proposed Art in Public Places project to adorn six utility boxes in the Cove.  Can’t wait to see some more art work….  Here’s the Desert Sun article:

“…….. My sweet little corner house, “Casita La Quinta” on Avenida D….with a knock out view of our magical mountians, is unfortunately, on the market. …….  The real reason for this email, is to say thank you to whoever is responsible for the website. It is nothing less than outstanding. Thank you to all involved for showing people the beauty of La Quinta Cove. I hate to leave. I guess with this market I don’t have to worry about that too soon! Thank you again, for showcasing our beautiful cove in such a professional manner. I’M A COVE DWELLER…and proud of it. Sorry that I have to go. I will never forget this little piece of paradise. Barbara K

THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS, BARBARA, AND GOOD LUCK!!

Book Report: Swan Peak

June 21st, 2009

Swan Peak——–by James Lee Burke

Louisiana lawman Dave Robicheaux and his wife Molly and their friend Clete Purcell travel to a friend’s Montana ranch to spend some time fishing and relaxing, away from the hectic pace of post-Katrina New Orleans. Rather than spending peaceful time enjoying the beautiful scenery and resting, they find themselves involved in the mystery of the murder of two college students in the area. Another murder, that of a couple found at an Interstate rest stop nearby, promotes speculation that a serial killer is preying on the area.

Dave and Clete offer their assistance to the local sheriff in investigating the deaths. As they begin to delve into the lives of the deceased, they find connections to an evangelical preacher and to an extremely rich family, who live like feudal lords on a huge estate in the Swan River Valley, protected by unsavory men who could have connections to the mob. The wife of one of the family members was a professional singer prior to their marriage and had been engaged to a man who was sent to prison in Louisiana for the death of a man who was beating a woman. While in prison, Jimmy Dale was sodomized by a guard and attempted to kill the guard with a shank before escaping, only to turn up in Montana seeking his former fiancée. The guard travels to Montana seeking revenge, believing Jimmy Dale would turn up there looking for Jamie Sue.

The plot has many twists and turns, involving the FBI as well as local law enforcement and the descriptions of the locale are both accurate and often breathtaking. Insights into the behavior and motivation of humanity are thought provoking. This is an excellent story.

As you drive by the Police Station (by the Village Post Office) you’ll notice this sign.  Looks like the City and CVWD are going to use the yard in front of the Police Station as a demonstration project to show what we can do with our lawns (take them out) and get financial support from the City/CVWD for the replacement (decomposed granite or other natural ground cover and landscaping).  If you still have grass, this project is for you.  Take a look and see what’s happening.

Call the City at 777-7108 to get all the information.
