Saturday afternoon saw a large crowd gathered for three blues groups at the Civic Center Campus.  The weather held and the audience was mellow.  Here’s a sample….

Mountain climbers and curious listeners turned out last Thursday to hear the dramatic story of the rare climb up the Tibetan north east face of Mt. Everest.  The Friends of La Quinta Library presented Jay Cassell, who winters in LQ, to show slides of his ascent in 1983, when his team of 13 embarked on their dangerous adventure.  Mr. Cassell was fascinating and his story breathtaking.

Former city council member and mayor during the 1980s, Judy Cox and her husband, former fire fighter, Robert Cox, were seen at the Veterans Day event.  Their second son was honored with his name on the veteran’s plaque.  Both parents have served this community from the beginning of cityhood, and are still active in the greater Coachella Valley.

Signal or roundabout?

November 14th, 2010

Tuesday afternoon, the City Council will be considering action at Sinaola and Eisenhower, where there is now a four-way stop.  Straw vote of Cove-ites.  Which do you prefer, a traffic signal or a roundabout (such as the east end of the Community Park in the Village)?  Bring up the website and cast your vote in the text box under LEAVE A REPLY.   You can use a fictitious name if you wish.

Last Saturday (Nov 13) the Historical Society had a “members only” bus tour of some of the Cove’s 63 historic casitas.  These were built in the mid 30s up until WWII by the Desert Club developers.  Maggie Gordon, author of “Historical Casitas of La Quinta Cove”, led the tour.  In addition to driving by a few dozen of these little gems, the attendees entered and toured four.  The owners were most gracious and happy to share these little treasures that they have lovingly restored.  (Now, you non-members, time to become members of the Historical Society, to take advantage of these perks).  Here’s an outside glimpse of two of the homes:

If you missed Sonny Evaros at the LQ Museum on the last First Friday (November 5), here’s a little taste of his style.  He has been playing piano in the Palm Springs area for decades, first with his siblings, and now with this offspring.  Four of the family members entertained a mellow throng in the courtyard on a lovely desert evening.

If you haven’t noticed the reverse side of your Ralph’s receipt, turn it over.  There’s a coupon there for the LQ Carwash (Hwy 111 and Adams) for $3.00 off the regular wash price.  It was tested today with great success.  That makes $9.99 plus tip.

Kids’ Carnival big success

Election follow-up….

November 7th, 2010

If you happened to vote by mail and placed a 44 cent stamp on your ballot (and later found out that 61 cents is required), not to worry.  The Village post office stated that they have honored the 44 cent stamps.

Also, many voters came to the polls stating that their vote by mail ballot was requested but never arrived.  They were able to vote a provisional ballot however, which will be verified later in Riverside, starting  November 15.  When asked if they had a back-up of vote by mail ballots, our local post office personnel stated that none were undelivered.
