Council member for over 25 years, Stanley Sniff passed away this week.  He was a force to be reckoned with, and a proud Cove dweller.  Our condolences to his family and friends.

Here’s a very nice article from the Desert Sun, thanks to our own reporter, Nicole Brambila: http://www.mydesert.com/article/20111130/NEWS01/111300305/Longtime-La-Quinta-councilman-Stan-Sniff-dies-85

9/11 fund-raiser at the Red Robin

November 23rd, 2011

Here is Andrew Davis in his Scout uniform at the Monday fund-raiser.  He’s standing in front of a graph he’s drawn to show dollars donated (on the left) and in-kind donations to the sculpture.  That’s the actual I-beam from the World Trade Center ruins at the bottom. There was a nice crowd that included the fire department, lots of Scouts and leaders, and well-wishers that included our Mayor.   Want to help bring that fire-charred metal to a park in LQ?  Call Andrew’s home at 760-985-6939.

Tom Genovese, our City Manager for many years, died while hiking on the Bump and Grinds Trail in Palm Desert Sunday morning, in the company of other city staff members and frieds.  This is a tragic loss to the community and his family.  He always strove to improve the City in general, and the Cove in particular.  We have lost a friend.

You still  have time to gt out to Lake Cahuilla today (Sunday, 20th) for the interesting and exciting Civil War action.  Sunday’s battles are at 11:00 and 2:00, with plenty to do in between….talk to all the “soldiers, the surgeon, blacksmith, camp seamstress” etc.  There was a large and enthusiastic crowd at Saturday morning and here are some scenes:

The year 2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War.  To commemorate this, the City of La Quinta, the La Quinta Museum, Historical Society, Riverside County, and several corporate sponsors will sponsor a unique weekend.   Saturday and Sunday will see scores of members of the American Civil War Society come to Lake Cahuilla and literally set up camp and fight some battles. In addition, the encampment will have hospital, chow wagons, and other elements common to the Civil War.

On Saturday (19th) the park opens to the public for FREE at 9:00 a.m. and battles will be “fought” with canons and muskets at 11:30 and 3:00.  The park will close at 5:00 that day.

On Sunday (20th) the park is open from 9-3:00, with church services at 9:00 and battles at 11:00 and 2:00.  Each battle will be different.  Guests are invited to ask questions of the “soldiers” to learn even more about this critical era of our nation’s history.

Also, vendors will offer food and souvenirs. Don’t miss this truly historic event…bring the kids and the cousins and the neighbors.  Remember, it’s free and it’s on our doorstep!

Family, friends and dignitaries gathered on Tuesday to honor Stanley Sniff, a councilman for 25 years.  A lovely metal obelisk is anchored in the lake of the Civic Center Park.  Take a walk and admire this beautiful art piece and read the plaque that explains the symbolism of the elements of the structure.

Here’s Andrew Davis, Cove resident and Eagle Scout, who is working on his Scout project to bring a beam from the World Trade Center ruins to a park in La Quinta.  Step one: he OBTAINED the beam for the City.

Now he’s asking for funds to pay for the construction of a sculpture to hold the beam and the cost to install it.  The La Quinta Red Robin will sponsor a fund-raiser for Andrew’s project on November 21 (details later) and the Indio Elks Club will hold a spaghetti dinner on November 13.  For information on how to donate (tax deductable) call Andrew’s family at 760-985-6939.  If you want to send a check, make it payable to The Boy Scouts of America Troop 50 and mail to Andrew Davis, 54-785 Avenida Rubio.  The tax ID number for the Boy Scouts is 33-0765686.

Let’s all get behind Andrew and his project to put La Quinta on the map with an actual piece of the World Trade Center as a public art piece.  Hurry.  The target completion date is March 2012.  Here’s Andrew himself:
