Great evening at the Museum
March 4th, 2012
It was a memorable First Friday last week, when two Caribbean-style musical groups entertained.
First, the “Desert Steel” band from Desert Ridge Academy (Indio, north of I-10) brought a dozen or so 6th, 7th and 8th graders so hammer away on their steel drums. Their dedicated teacher, Larry McCoy, just happens to be a Cove resident, which makes us all proud to see what these students can do. Here’s a number that starts with Vivaldi and morphs into “El Bimbo” of all things! http://youtu.be/3xk9WegAyX4
Next feature was Noel Lawrence and his “Island Rhythms” with band members from Trinidad, Belize and other parts of the Caribbean. Their set ended with a conga line that encircled the whole area. It was an inspired audience. http://youtu.be/eT4G6r9E0KM

Joe Baldino at the Library …
February 19th, 2012
The Friends of the LQ Library sponsored a great evening of jazz, featuring Joe Baldino on the guitar. Joe pre-records his accompaniment and cues it with his feet. Quite a one-man band. You can see Joe on Sundays at the Farmers Market in front of the fountain.
Nature Walk last Saturday: in search of the wildflower
February 19th, 2012
Katie Barrows led a hardy group of flower-seekers on a great walk on a beautiful morning. Lack of rain has meant few wildflower sightings, but there were plenty of interesting birds, trees, plants to keep the group interested. Next month (March 17) wildflowers will be included in the topic, so stay with it, naturalists. Sponsored by the City of La Quinta and the Stewards of the Fred Wolff Nature Preserve.
Interesting panel of historians at the Museum
February 19th, 2012
The LQ Historical Society presented the second in the series of “LQ History Series” last Friday at the Museum. A LARGE crowd enjoyed the stories and yarns told by Judy Vossler, long-time general manager of the LQ Hotel (before it was the “resort”), Barbara Irwin, local historian, and Tom Kennedy, of the Kennedy agricultlural dynasty that owned most of what is now PGA West.
Here, Linda Williams, President of the Historical Society, introduces the panel and tells about future events at the Museum: http://youtu.be/C2v94EUTjDA
Evening with the Friends of the Library: TONIGHT!
February 15th, 2012
Join the Friends of the Library at 6:00 tonight (February 16) for some guitar and electronic music by Joe Baldino, a Cove resident. Like nothing you’ve heard before, smooth and riotous jazz with a Latin flavor. Sounds like a band, but it’s only one talented guy! It’s free and it will be FUN.
Family Nature Walk last Saturday (11th)
February 12th, 2012
About 30 hikers of ALL ages enjoyed an exciting look at plants and other live creatures in the Fred Wolff Nature Preserve and the mountains across the channel (Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains Monument).
Here you see kids placing sealed plastic bags over creosote leaves. At the end of the walk, they examined the interior of the bags to note any interesting phenomenon.
