DID YOU KNOW…..

December 8th, 2008

The YMCA of the Desert is an integral part of La Quinta’s youth and recreation programs….  This nonprofit organization operates the aquatic programs at the Fritz Burns Pool, with recreational swims, lap swimming, swim lessons, water polo, water aerobics and private party rental.  The pool is equipped with a chair lift for citizens in wheel chairs.  At a recent meeting of the LQ Community Services Commission, YMCA staff gave a review of the summer pool statistics, showing increased usage of this popular Cove facility.

In addition to summer programs, YMCA offers after school programs in the Cove at Adams and Franklin schools, middle school sports, and Youth in Government for LQ High School students.  In response to last years drowning tragedy at LQHS, the YMCA offered swimming lessons at the LQHS pool, during which 42 students learned to swim.

Of course, the longest-standing YMCA-LQ partnership is the preschool program (next to Truman school and the Boys and Girls Club), which has served hundreds of children over the past 20 years.

YMCA rates are based on membership or non-membership in the organization, however La Quinta residents automatically qualify for  membership rates.  In hardship cases, financial assistance is available to cover some or all of the fees for participation.

The YMCA presented a beautiful plaque (comprised of student drawings) to the City of LQ for its ongoing support of programs in the community.  Visit their website at http://www.desertymca.org/
