ENERGY TIPS

July 19th, 2009

Our electric bills are soaring…… ’tis the season!  Here are some tips from IID:

1. If you’re not on the “average payment program” now’s a good time to join that IID program.  They will average your bills for the year and you pay the same amount each month.  At the end of the year, if you owe some extra, pay it off.  If you have used less electricity than expected, you’ll get credit.  Call IID at 335-3640.

2. Of course, replace your old bulbs with CFLs.  If you can replace your five highest usage areas, you can save up to $70 per year.  These bulbs also last longer.  It pays to replace.

3. If you’re gone a few weeks, be sure to unplug as many “energy vampires” as possible in your home: chargers, coffee makers, cable box, fax machine, clock radios, etc.  These units use electricity even when you’re not using them because they have clocks or are on standby.  And be sure to set your water heaters to “vacation” mode.
