La Quinta Cove’s artist honored for artwork
February 28th, 2008
The La Quinta Arts Foundation and the city honored Elliott Newton of La Quinta Cove over the weekend as Distinguished Artist of La Quinta.
Newton, who calls himself “The Potter of La Quinta,” enrolled in ceramics classes at College of the Desert to begin his career, according to the city. He became “addicted,” and now owns a studio on Avenida Ramirez in the La Quinta Cove.
Award nominations are taken from the community and approved by City Council each year.
Recipients’ names are engraved in the La Quinta Artists monument, according to Christi Salamone, executive director of the foundation.
Civic Center Park is the home to three monuments, including one for local veterans, sports figures and artists, according to recreation supervisor Tustin Larson.
