La Quinta Disaster Drills

November 16th, 2008

The City of La Quinta staff and community volunteers participated in a day-long drill on Thursday, November 13, joining millions of citizens across California who are preparing for “the big one”, coming soon to a fault near you!  The Emergency Operations Center (“EOC”) was in full (simulated) swing, testing communications systems and functionality of the emergency plan for the city.  Lots was learned from the drill, that will enable city staff and CERT volunteers (“Community Emergency Response Team”) to act promptly to coordinate services when the big one strikes.

On Saturday, November 15, twelve La Quinta CERT volunteers participated in a county-wide practice drill in Palm Desert.  Ninety -six volulnteers from across the county practiced three skills over a four hour period.  Check out the clips below showing fire extinguishers, “cribbing” to lift heavy objects trapping victims, and triage, the prioritizing of injured victims to assure the most endangered receive medical attention first.  If you are interested in joining the CERT volunteers, call the City at 777-7061.
