CPR and First Aid classes held

January 29th, 2012

The City of La Quinta sponsored two days of classes for staff and CERT volunteers last week.  CPR, AED, and First Aid were topics, given by a trainer from the American Heart Association.  Here you see the Infant CPR session, with infant “dummies” for each trainee.  There was lots of practice and plenty of useful information during the day-long session.  The session was held in the Emergency Operations Center at City Hall.

Here’s Susan Miller who was one of 30 volunteers trained at the City Emergency Operations Center on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.  She will tell you all about it (‘way to go, Susan).

Here are some of the vendors that offered information and services to help us get ready for The Big One or other disasters.  Take a look. http://www.youtube.com/user/CovePotato#p/a/u/0/sopOTr6CXcw

Here’s a glimpse of the CERT trainees’ class in the Emergency Operations Center in the basement of  LQ City Hall.  When the Big One comes, this will be the nerve center of the emergency response by City staff and other agencies, such as the fire department, Red Cross, utilities, and trailed CERT volunteers.

New CERT trainees in action

April 3rd, 2011

About 30 new LQ residents were trained on a Thursday/Saturday/Saturday sequence starting on March 24.  Their hands-on activities took place on Saturday April 2 at City Hall.  These volunteers are trained to work in their neighborhoods and support city and fire department staffs in case of a disaster.  Sound interesting?  Call Paul Hess at city hall to learn how YOU and your neighborhood can become involved.  These residents were from LQ Fairways, Laguna de la Paz, and the Cove.

Paul Hess has recently been assigned the crucial job of helping La Quinta prepare for future emergencies.  He readies not only the City’s Emergency Operations Center, where staff will coordinate activities in the event of an emergency, but he will be helping our neighborhoods get organized also.  Here’s Paul:

All shook up….

LQ CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) participated in a Home Depot earthquake event on Saturday.  The major excitement was the trailer that simulated a 7.5-8.0 earthquake.  Take a look at the jolt, then get busy on your earthquake kit: get it started or refresh your food and water….  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI_lqBKGxwk

LQ Picnic draws a big crowd

Plenty of performers and community organizations attracted large crowds on Saturday morning at the La Quinta Park (across from the high school).  The following links take you to

The LQ Emergency Services department conducted a CERT training recently (Community Emergency Response Team).  The culmination of three sessions was a mock disaster with trainees performing triage and first aid to “victims”.  Twenty-eight more community members have been trained to assist in the event of a disaster.  Here’s a little clip   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFVVer8szw4

Animal Samaritans presented a 3-hour training for City employees and your Community Emergency Response Team last week.  Here’s a short look at the training, done at the Emergency Operations Center under City Hall.  If YOU would like to take this course, call Animal Samaritans at 760-343-4326.
