Time to help out Andrew……

December 7th, 2011

Remember Andrew Davis, the Cove Boy Scout who is working on his Eagle Scout badge?  He’s raising money to build a sculpture in the Civic Center Campus park that holds the piece of the World Trade Center ruins, remember?  Well, right now is the perfect time to make a donation if you’re going to: a) income tax deduction for 2011, and b) Andrew will be reporting on his fund-raising success to the city in early January.

If you are inclined to donate to this wonderful La Quinta project, you can send your contribution to Andrew Davis, 54-785 Rubio, and make your check payable to Boy Scouts of America Troop 50.  The tax ID number is 33-0765686.  Personal contributions to the 9/11 memorial are being matched, so your $10 dontation will be worth #20 to Andrew.

9/11 fund-raiser at the Red Robin

November 23rd, 2011

Here is Andrew Davis in his Scout uniform at the Monday fund-raiser.  He’s standing in front of a graph he’s drawn to show dollars donated (on the left) and in-kind donations to the sculpture.  That’s the actual I-beam from the World Trade Center ruins at the bottom. There was a nice crowd that included the fire department, lots of Scouts and leaders, and well-wishers that included our Mayor.   Want to help bring that fire-charred metal to a park in LQ?  Call Andrew’s home at 760-985-6939.

Family, friends and dignitaries gathered on Tuesday to honor Stanley Sniff, a councilman for 25 years.  A lovely metal obelisk is anchored in the lake of the Civic Center Park.  Take a walk and admire this beautiful art piece and read the plaque that explains the symbolism of the elements of the structure.

The City paid tribute to 18 new names enscribed on the Veterans monument in Civic Center Park last Friday.  Here’s the La Quinta High School Honor Guard bringing in the colors: http://youtu.be/w2m_1Xj-Lzo

All’s well at the Civic Center Park, with a diminished duck population contributing to the cleanliness and tranquility of the park. There is still evidence that the public is feeding the ducks.  The Orange County Registerreports that dozens of dead or dying duck have been found in area ponds and lakes, apparent victims of botulism poisoning.  It states that bread thrown into lakes provide nutrients for botulism to grow! We love out ducks, so let’s protect them from disease and obesity!

Calling all vets…..

September 21st, 2011

Are you a military veteran?  Know a vet?  Is your name inscribed on the monument in the Civic Center park?  If not, march right up and add your name to your fellow soldiers, sailors, marines, and coast guards.  Deadline is Friday, September 30.  For all the info, call Community Services at 777-7090.  Honoring of new names will be on November 11, Veterans Day.

One of the many frequent walkers in the Civic Center Park is a charming Korean lady whose mission it is to take care of the ducks, especially the young ones.

A great example of motherhood in our fair city….self-sacrificing, hard-working and setting a good example for her family.
