History series at the Museum

In honor of La Quinta’s 30 years since incorporation, the LQ Historical Society is sponsoring a series of four history discussions beginning tomorrow, January 20.  Each will take place from 5-7 p.m. and is free of charge. Here’s the lineup.  And you’ll be reminded each month again, as the new event nears:

  • January 20: Pre-History & Native Americans, Bradshaw Trail, and Point Happy Ranch: Harry Quinn and Louise Neeley
  • February 17: La Quinta Hotel and Ranches: Judy Vossler, Barbara Irwin, and Tom Kennedy
  • March 23: The Desert Club & Historical Casitas of La Quinta Cove: Johanna Wickman and Maggie Gordon
  • April 13: City Incorporation, Arts Foundation, and Historical Society: Kay Wolff and Terry Henderson

Huge crowd at Blues and Brews

The City of La Quinta, Community Services Department and La Quinta Arts Foundation joined to add five honorees to the list of Distinguished Artists listed in the Civic Center Campus park.  They are pictured here along with Mayor Adolph (far left)  and council members Evans and Franlkin (on the right).  Honorees are the late  Jean Rosker (represented by her husband Ben), John Bowman,  Eddie Gilreath, Joe Oakes and Jan Blakley.

Perfect weather and a great array of artists attracted many to Old Town and the Arts Foundation’s Art Under the Umbrella show.  Didn’t get there?  Don’t despair: there’s another one on Saturday, February 26th.

Big Saturday coming up (13th)

  • Kids’ Nature Walk 9:00 Another great opportunity for young people to get their hands into nature’s wonder, this time on the topic of Desert Plants.  Kids will study plants from the roots up, and have fun doing it.  Some teachers are giving extra credit for this activity, so check it out.  Meet at the rest stop at Ensenada and Montezuma.

  • Art under the Umbrellas 10-4:00 in Old Town.  Stroll around, chose a Valentines gift for your sweetie, browse the shops, relax at the restaurants.  Music on Main Street.

  • “Live Roq” Concert at the Community Park from 2-4:00.  Bring your chairs, blankets, and goodies for an afternoon of musical fun for the whole family.

SATURDAY EVENTS (January 16)

  • Nature Walk begins at the Ensenada rest stop along the Fred Wolff Bear Creek Trail.  “Written in Rick” starts at 8:00 a.m. and you are all welcome….
  • Art under the Umbrellas in Old Town returns from 10 – 4:00.  Stroll among the artists, drop in at  the shops and restaurants.  Always a great art experience.

The golf-themed exhibit, “Sweet Spot” is up and running and will have it’s official opening on Friday, January 8 from 5-7 p.m.  Master club-maker Mario Cesariowill be present, along with the “Bob Hope Classic Girls” to launch this unusual exhibit.    Regular museum hours are Tuesdays – Saturdays from 10-4.  As always, it’s free for all ages….  The exhibit is co-sponsored by the La Quinta Arts Foundation, the City of La Quinta Museum, and the Historical Society.

The LQ Museum, LQ Arts Foundation, and the LQ Historical Society have  joined to bring an unusual series of golf-related events to our Museum.  In addition to the exhibit that is now open, mark these dates on your calendar (all free to one and all)

January 8: 5 p.m. opening reception and meet Mario Cesario, noted golf club maker for the stars

January 9: 10 a.m. Interactive golf activities for youth ages 6-16, “The First Tee”.  Limited to the first 30 reservations, call 777-7170

January 11 Round table discussion with Marion Cesario, Marlene Hagge, Dan Poppers, Greg Cesario, Ted Lyford, Jeff Johnson, Fred Scherzer, Dave Evans, Ken Venturi and others from 2-4 p.m.

January 14 Golf Fitness wih Dr. Hashimoto noon – 1 p.m.

January  23: Lecture by Judy Vossler on La Quinta’s Golf Legacy  10 – noon

January  30  Larry Bohannan of the Desert Sun will talk on “Reflections on the Hope Classic and Golf in LQ” at 10:30.
