Sharon Snow, at the LQ Library, introduces this new space especially for middle and high school students.  It’s a great resource for research or for pleasure reading.  Turn your volume up a tad, after all, it’s a LIBRARY:

The switch to drought-resistant landscaping has been completed at the Community Policing building in the Village.  Here’s a little tour of the improvements.

Also, you may have noticed the ripping out of sod along La Fonda in front of the Senior Center, Library, Civic Center Park and City Hall.  These are destined for similar new landscaping, as well as the flagged areas along Tampico for these same buildings.  We are told that a MILLION gallons of water is used to irrigate city land, and this amount will be reduced by these improvements.

Mountain climbers and curious listeners turned out last Thursday to hear the dramatic story of the rare climb up the Tibetan north east face of Mt. Everest.  The Friends of La Quinta Library presented Jay Cassell, who winters in LQ, to show slides of his ascent in 1983, when his team of 13 embarked on their dangerous adventure.  Mr. Cassell was fascinating and his story breathtaking.

What’s going on at the Museum?

September 12th, 2010

It’s been a busy summer at the Museum with new features in the permanent collection (check out the new mural) and two continuing special exhibitions. The popular “PT Barnum and the Circus” and “Old Hollywood and the Desert Club” are still gracing the upstairs galleries.  The July opening of the Desert Club exhibit was a big hit as impersonators charmed the crowd in character roles.  There are some archived videos on this website.

In a joint venture with the Library, “Golden Age of Hollywood” film festival is in full swing, with three remaining films, “His Girl Friday” (Sept 15), “Night of the Hunter” (the 22nd), and “Captain Blood” (the 29th).  These are all free and begin at 1:30 with an introduction by Museum Manager, Johanna Wickman.  These are AT THE LIBRARY.

Two great science programs were offered free in June and July.  “Water Wonders” was well attended by lots of our young folks.

Mariachi players, Rafael and Katia, will enliven the Library at 3:00 today (29th).  Don’t miss this free fun for the entire family.

Want a little break on a Thursday afternoon?  Fun for young and old?  Inter-generational mixing?  (and free?)

Juy 1: Dan Crow returns with music for all

July 8: Ventriloquist John Gandleman with puppets

July 15: Wildlife Company brings a menagerie of interesting critters

July 22: Juggler Johnathon

July 29: Mariachi duo, Rafael and Katia

Beth and her staff and volunteers make the LQ Library a popular and wonderful place to visit.

Percussionist Chazz Ross returns to the Library on June 24 at three, for a free musical show for the whole family.  Come and enjoy the fun.

The Desert Oasis (ukelele) Strummers entertained at the Library last Thursday.  This lively program was sponsored by The Friends of La Quinta Library as a public service.  Here’s a sample of their offerings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvPx64EBs0Y
