TALK BACK: Election signs???

September 15th, 2008

FROM “SLEEPLESS IN LQ”:  I was wondering if there is a city ordinance regarding candidate election signs. My main concern is signs on city owned property. If you drive on our main streets that have beautiful landscaped medians, you will see that they are now being used (cluttered) by the candidates for their election signs. I can see personal/private property being used but to clutter up our beautiful city property with these signs doesn’t seem right?

Comments anyone?

Timely question, “Sleepless.” Yes, there is an ordinance in the City code. I believe it states that each candidate pays $50 and gets 50 orange stickers to attach to the signs. They may be posted on private or public property (free speech issues), however not on utility poles or stop signs. The Code folks watch these pretty carefully, and later assure that they are taken down within a day or so after the election. Check the code for the particulars. (http://qcode.us/codes/laquinta/ section 9.160.060. The Council is also considering some changes to this regulation, so stay tuned…..

I agree with previous post, however, the main concern is that after the elections, those signs are not removed PROMPTLY! Maybe campaigns/candidates should be fined for leaving signs way past elections.

Observer: Notice today, that most of the signs that were put in the landscaped medians have been removed. Those that remain DO contain the orange dot.

    Thanks,

La Quinta’s Temporary Sign Ordinance 9.160.060 provides a balance of allowing signs for candidates and others to get their message to the public with certain restrictions. The candidates with more than five signs need to apply for a permit and provide a $200.00 deposit. The deposit ensures they remove the signs within 7 days after the election. In most instances, they are removed sooner. Signs are allowed in the median island but may not be closer than five feet from the paved road, may not be affixed to power poles, street signs, signals, trees, tree stakes and other locations or closer than 200′ from the same candidate’s sign.
